UK Finance giants defend offshore outsourcing

UK Finance giants defend offshore outsourcing

Mar 28, 2007

The UK’s financial giants have defended their Indian call centre operations amid fresh concerns from British customers about data security and declining customer service.

An internal report from insurer Norwich Union found shortcomings in its Indian call centres may potentially lead to losses of more than £10million, and fines from the FSA.

Banking giant HSBC was also accused this week of running a ‘first-class and second class system’ that sees affluent callers dealt with in the UK, while poorer ones are diverted to the sub-continent. A HSBC spokesperson dismissed the claims. Similarly, asked yesterday about Norwich Union’s troubled call centres in India, the National Outsourcing Association (NOA) hinted it was unfair to suggest the location was to blame.

Is US Blind to Dangers of Foreign Outsourcing?

Is US Blind to Dangers of Foreign Outsourcing?

By Thomas Emmon Pisano, Seoul Times Columnist on The outsourcing of American manufacturing

"To answer the above stated question, yes America is oblivious to what is happening to her economy, society, standards, and its people because of foreign outsourcing. We, as Americans, run many risks because of the utilization of off shore manufactured goods and raw materials. I have come to this conclusion about outsourcing; through an unfortunate and rude awakening, this reporter has discovered that as hard as overseas manufactures and service providers may try, their products are inferior to domestically manufactured goods and services, " says the author in this note.

CPA Partners India as a Preferred Off-Shore Destination to Drive Global Growth Plans

CPA Partners India as a Preferred Off-Shore Destination to Drive Global Growth Plans

Press release

LONDON, March 28 - CPA, the world's leading IP services
provider, formally announce the establishment of its state-of-the-art IP
services delivery centre in India. This development marks CPA's continued
investment in India and makes it an intrinsic part of the company's
strategic growth plan.

Peter Sewell, CPA's Global CEO, explains: "We've had a presence in
India for the past 18 months, via Intellevate however the full launch of
our Indian operation is key. This Indian operations centre will become the
engine room that enables CPA to become the global leader in outsourced
legal services."

CPA currently employs over 200 staff in India, that work with CPA's
other IP specialists across the globe to deliver a unique combination of
on-and off- shore services to clients. CPA is already a major player in the
IP services market and as the legal outsourcing phenomenon grows, CPA is
well positioned to capture this expanding market.

Baskhar Bagchi, County Head of the India centre agrees: "It's an
exciting time to be part of CPA as India has been identified as a strategic
market for CPA's global growth plans. I am particularly pleased to be
working in such an innovative environment, amongst a fantastic group of IP
professionals and to be part of a truly global workplace. Moving forward,
we'll continue to develop the IP support team in India in order to deliver
high value IP strategies and integrated support services to our global
clients."

"Our development in India is thanks to the quality of people we have
and will have working for us. Their intelligence, academic ability, eye for
detail and dedication is outstanding proving that it's not only
cost-effectiveness that has lured us to set up operations there. India also
provides us with the capacity to grow and over the next 3 years we'll be
investing up to $50 million. Longer-term we hope to create 10,000 great
careers in India," says Peter Sewell.

India has been an off-shore destination for business process
outsourcing (BPO) for many years and statistics show that India is a
preferred choice for both knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) and legal
process outsourcing (LPO). As the LPO trend continues, CPA also plans to
move into new markets, outside of the IP arena and with another
announcement set for the coming months, CPA's position in India means that
it will be extremely well placed to help clients take part in this
revolution.

The IP Market

The global legal services market, which includes major developed
English speaking countries: US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand was
estimated to be worth around $190 billion in 2005. The overall addressable
offshore opportunity in legal services is estimated to be $4.5 billion by
2010. The Indian off-shore industry will grow dramatically, especially in
2006 and 2007; and from a current revenue base of $61.6 million we expect
off-shoring revenues to touch $605 million in 2010.

Currently law firms are the largest service buyers from the Indian
legal off-shoring industry contributing about 49% of the total $61.6
million revenues. The others are corporations and legal publishers.

1800 people were employed in the legal off-shoring industry in India in
2005. This is set to increase to 12,000 in 2008 and 24,000 in 2010. The
Indian legal off-shoring industry will grow ten-fold over the next four
years to revenues of $600 million.

The UK and US accounted for 95% of outsourcing to India in 2005. Key
growth areas will be patent search, filing, etc. (IP related work) as well
as transaction oriented, process driven work such as conveyancing and
property transfer transactions.

Outsourcing patent work - Pitfalls

Outsourcing patent work - Pitafalls

By Scott Harris, Fish & Richardson PC, March 27, 2007

Legal costs for patent work have seen astronomical increases, and many companies are under pressure to reduce their patent costs. This has led many companies to lower-cost providers of patent work.

A number of Indian patent outsourcing companies do patent work at a billing rate at one-tenth of the billing rates from top-tier U.S. firms.

Yet many don't realize the significant disadvantages and difficulties that flow with Indian outsourcing, and even malfeasance that may lead to criminal acts, says this article.

Safe From Outsourcing? Maybe Think Again

Safe From Outsourcing? Maybe Think Again

28 Mar 2007

Economist Alan Blinder thinks the impact of free trade is about a lot more than moving customer service jobs to India or manufacturing to China.

Today's Wall Street Journal details the evolution on Blinder's thinking on globalization and its impact on jobs. Blinder, say reporters David Wessel and Bob Davis, sees as many as 40 million jobs being at risk of moving offshore over the next 20 or so years - more than double the number of American workers involved in manufacturing today.

What kind of jobs are at the most risk? According to Blinder, it's those that don't require a lot of face-to-face contact.

Small firms are falling behind in outsourcing IT functions, a new survey has revealed.

According to research by the Irish Computer Society (ICS), IT outsourcing has become common practice in Irish organisations, with some 72 per cent taking advantage of the services.

Smaller IT departments, however, appear to be holding on to their services inhouse, despite the traditional assumption that these firms would be more likely to farm out their IT applications.

Outsourcing is a double-edged sword for Irish jobs

In a week when almost 1,000 job losses were announced in Ireland, there is constant flight of jobs from Ireland to lower cost locations.

Two of the cutbacks announced - Motorola in Cork and Thompson Scientific in Limerick - will lead to jobs being transferred to India as part of a growing trend which experts say is set to continue to hit lower skilled sectors of the economy.

An increasing number of Irish firms moving operations to India are doing so to ensure their survival, he said.

Outsourcing of R&D Set to Increase - Despite Concerns About Control

The cost and complexity of the innovation process are encouraging companies from a wide range of sectors to transform the way they carry out research and development (R&D), according to a new Economist Intelligence Unit survey. Rather than retaining R&D as a central function, a growing number of companies are both outsourcing and offshoring aspects of the innovation process in what is termed a global innovation network model, says this article.

Datamonitor Study Highlights Opportunities for Marketing Service Providers

Datamonitor Study Highlights Opportunities for Marketing Service Providers

Press release - March 08, 2007

Alterian Partners Excel in Assessment of Leading UK MSPs

LONDON - Alterian (LSE:ALN), the leading global provider of software for Analytically Led Integrated Marketing, today announced that many of its partners are ranked amongst the leaders in Datamonitor’s new report, ‘The UK Marketing Service Provider Market’, including Acxiom, EuroRSCG and Occam. The study examined the attitudes of 100 marketing decision-makers and analysed the capabilities of 15 leading Marketing Service Providers (MSPs).

The report provides an in-depth study of the market from both a supply and demand point of view, valuable for marketers when identifying the right MSPs to consider when selecting an outsourcing partner and also an essential resource for MSPs when planning the development of their products and services.

Conducted by independent market analysts Datamonitor (www.datamonitor.com), the research has revealed that the primary reason UK marketers outsource to Marketing Service Providers is to gain access to analytical skills not available in house, while access to marketing technologies/applications came second. Reduced cost was the third priority.

Datamonitor surveyed 15 of the UK’s leading MSPs including Identex, Acxiom, Data Lateral, Experian and GB Group, to create a matrix assessing their abilities in different areas including strategy, analysis, database hosting and online/digital services. This section of the study helps guide marketers when refining their marketing partner selection shortlists.

“Identex believes its strong position in the Datamonitor matrix confirms the benefits marketers receive from partnering with us and underlines our capability to support the diverse needs of leading UK marketers,” said Rob Macdermott, CEO, Identex. “Alterian technology helps us to deliver innovative customer insight applications for clients such as Best Western, Post Office and Interflora. These applications provide a better understanding of customer data and increase campaign effectiveness.”

The Datamonitor report also covers what the largest growth areas in marketing outsourcing are expected to be, the barriers to outsourcing and what the most popular services offered by MSPs are – which show areas such as on-line marketing services growing fast.

“We are delighted to see so many of our partners scoring highly in this new study and helping establish industry best practice,” commented David Eldridge, CEO, Alterian. “The report shows that the combination of MSPs’ skills with Alterian technology is in big demand – particularly in the area of using analytics to drive strategy and execution. Successful service providers will be those which continue to move further up the value chain and expand into new areas like online.”

European life insurer Aviva recently exercised the transfer option with one of its BPO vendors 24/7 Customer, to take over and run the delivery centre in Bangalore, which was set up in 2003...Similarly, in January, Dendrite International took over the offshore development centre run by Aztec Software in Bangalore...

This article explores the status and dynamics of the BOT model in the prevailing software services environment to establish whether this continues to be in vogue.

Offshoring Mothers? - India gives birth to lucrative business

India gives birth to lucrative business

By Siddharth Srivastava

NEW DELHI - Surrogate mothers being outsourced to India add one more chapter to the saga of cheaper "jobs" being transferred to low-cost economies such as India. For now, "hiring" a womb appears to be a win-win situation, both from the cost and quality of medical service.

For instance, the town Anand in Gujarat has become known for such in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures. The cost of renting a womb is under US$5,000, compared to more than $50,000 in the West. The entire procedure in India costs in the range of $10,000, and the quality of treatment and technology and the expertise of the country's doctors compares with the best in the world.

Gurgaon, India ?February 27, 2007. Evalueserve, the global research and analytics firm, is the winner of the prestigious NASSCOM IT Innovations Awards 2006. Evalueserve has won this award in the Business Model innovation category and has been recognized for its business intelligence services, customized reports and value-added research to clients in different industry verticals. Evalueserve is one of the 7 finalists ( from the short listed 18 companies ) who have been felicitated by the Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh at the NASSCOM 2007 India Leadership Forum, on the 9th of February in Mumbai.

The Prime Minister while addressing in the event said ?In the field of business process outsourcing ( BPO ), we must not only retain our first mover advantage, but move up the value chain. To be able to do so, our BPO industry should increasingly become a knowledge process outsourcing ( KPO ) industry. It should leverage on the high quality human capital that exists in the country in a wide range of fields ? in engineering, architecture, medicine, law, accountancy, finance, management, and entertainment. This transition from BPO to KPO will require broad-basing the knowledge economy and improving its capabilities.?

Evalueserve is a pioneer in innovation and has created the new business segment called KPO ( Knowledge Process Outsourcing ). It was infact one of the first, third party provider of research and analytics services from India serving the global markets. Evalueserve has been successful in differentiating itself from the realm of traditional offshoring models.

?The unique and innovative business model that Evalueserve is thriving on allows disaggregation of the knowledge value chain and enables more innovation for our end clients, especially SME?s. This is definitely a world class business model and we expect to be more successful with this model,? is what Marc Vollenweider, CEO & Co-founder, Evalueserve said.

Ashish Gupta, COO & Country Head, Evalueserve, who was in Mumbai to collect the award, said ?Innovation is becoming the CEO?s agenda in many large companies. IP for example is no longer seen as a legal function but as a strategic issue. Rather than leaving it to be an evolutionary process, the top management of companies should take it up as a business issue. Large companies have to understand that they either innovate or they die.?

NASSCOM is the representative body of IT services in India and the NASSCOM IT Innovation in India Awards 2006 aims to highlight different facets of IT innovation in India ? process, business models and products. This award also aims to encourage, support and reward innovative approaches and breakthrough solutions and recognize the people and the organizations behind these endeavors.NASSCOM believes that IT innovation is slowly gathering momentum in India. As global customers and giant ICT companies outsource their core product development and R&D work to the country and as its service providers make "out-of the-box" services a key differentiator, an ecosystem of innovation is getting built in India.

However, this rapidly growing area is facing the same challenge as that of other IT/ITES (information technology-enabled services) related segments -- finding the right qualified talent, especially in niche areas like financial analytics.

Captives in India: Evolution and Growth

Captives in India: Evolution and Growth

March 26, 2007 - Global Services

Captives account for 30% of the overall Indian offshore services market. This is not only growing, but is also evolving in terms of services being offered, says a report by H. Karthik, Nikhil Rajpal and Geetha Tedakapalli, Everest Research Institute

There is a strong perception that the captive business model is under threat, and that third-party suppliers, especially in the Indian context, are maturing and are taking significant steps to expand the scale and the scope of processes delivered, thereby posing a threat to the captive model.

However, contrary to perception, Everest research indicates that captives are a large and significant section of the Indian offshore services market, and will continue to grow rapidly. This article traces the evolution of the Indian captive market and highlights that not only is captive adoption spreading to new verticals and functions, but captives now offer more complex, high-end services for their parent organizations than before.

BPOs smart under telephony curbs

BS Reporter / New Delhi March 4, 2007

The Business Process Industry Association of India (BPIAI) has condemned the government's decision to clamp down on 'illegal' use of internet telephony by call centres and business process outsourcing (BPO) units in the country.

In a move that is likely to affect nearly 5,000 small call centres across the country, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) recently directed Internet service providers (ISPs) to suspend provision of bandwidth to call centres and BPOs not registered with the DoT.

Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) President Rajesh Chharia has opposed this move from the government.

Major Offshore Destination Tastes Sweet, Sour At A Go

March 21, 2007

by Imrana Khan, Global Services

India, one of the top offshore outsourcing destinations, faced both good and bad news recently when three multinational corporations announced their future plans.

IBM announced that it will invest six billion dollars in India in 2009., with some of the investment going into the expansion of IBM Research facilities in India. Another reason to cheer is Accenture, the Bermuda-based consulting and tech services firm, which also announced its plans to increase the headcount of its management advisors. On the sour side, Dell, the world’s largest PC maker, announced that India doesn’t fit in their $19 billion global investment plan. The company says that India’s high tariff keeps it away to invest there.

A Shore Thing - More CIOs will say “Sure” to offshoring

Peter Hind 06 March, 2007

Reporting on the discussions about offshoring at a roundtable conference of CIOs, Peter Hind says what was made plain in these roundtable discussions was that this was not about cost saving. Most recognized the inherent hidden costs that would arise from offshoring, especially the transition costs of utilizing it...but it could be more to do with competitive advantage, more about agility of response.

In a turbulent and uncertain market offshoring could give companies the ability to resource up or scale down, felt some of the CIOs at the event....This was why many CIOs present felt that they had, at least, to put their toe in the offshoring waters...

Metavante, Temenos in Strategic Alliance to Launch Core Banking Platform in USA

Metavante and TEMENOS Form Strategic Alliance to Launch Advanced Core Banking Platform for United States

Press release

March 14, 2007

Metavante and Temenos form exclusive alliance for TCB in U.S.

Product development aimed at top-tier U.S. financial institutions

Metavante and Temenos take U.S. leadership in next wave of core technology

MILWAUKEE & GENEVA, Switzerland - Metavante Corporation, the financial technology subsidiary of Marshall & Ilsley Corporation (NYSE: MI), today announced the signing of a strategic agreement with TEMENOS Group (SWX: TEMN), the international provider of integrated core banking systems, to launch an advanced core banking platform based on TEMENOS™ COREBANKING (TCB) for top-tier U.S. financial institutions.

This innovative initiative combines leading TEMENOS TCB global banking technology with Metavante’s unique depth of banking knowledge and 40 years of experience in developing and deploying technology for the U.S. financial services marketplace. Metavante will be the exclusive provider of the new, advanced TCB-based platform to the United States market and also enjoy a preferential status for providing TCB as an outsourced solution internationally.

Metavante will deliver the new, enhanced TCB-based platform on a component basis, enabling large banks to replace aging solutions on a “line of business,” or phased approach. It will initially be available as a licensed solution designed for tier-one and tier-two financial institutions. In addition, Metavante plans to integrate these advanced capabilities as a series of component upgrades for those large financial institutions already using its core banking platform.

“Metavante is making a significant investment in core banking that, together with our on-going investment in our core business, will provide financial institutions with access to the latest technology and functionality to successfully compete in tomorrow’s banking market,” said Metavante President and Chief Executive Officer Frank Martire. “This platform will be one cornerstone of Metavante’s growth strategy for serving large financial institutions and expanding business internationally.”

“We expect the combination of Metavante’s leading market position, its development and distribution prowess in the U.S. banking software market, and its expertise in outsourcing services, with the product superiority of TCB will prove a formidable combination both in the United States and internationally,” said TEMENOS Chief Executive Officer Andreas Andreades.

TCB is the Temenos’ solution for large-scale retail and commercial banks. TCB is a highly scalable solution for tier-one and tier-two banks, as well as multi-bank outsourcing centers. It is a next-generation platform that delivers core retail processing together with a competitive advantage. TCB runs a number of large-scale banking operations. In Europe, TCB operates in the largest retail bank outsourcing center in Spain, running 74 banks and supporting a branch network of over 4,000 branches in a single processing instance. In Asia, TCB has been used as the core platform for a retail bank processing 17 million accounts.

“Because the TCB solution is platform independent, it can be deployed in COBOL as well as Java in a J2EE environment. This should be attractive to large U.S. banks, which operate with large mainframe environments and are challenged with aging platforms,” said Paul Danola, group president, Metavante Enterprise Solutions. “The new Metavante solution will provide large banks with next-generation technology to support advanced frameworks and standards; platform independence; offer a parameter-based solution built with flexible code generation; and a services-oriented architecture that is both open and able to integrate to other environments,” he added.

Metavante and Temenos will be co-hosting an investor briefing session in New York on 21st March, and in London on the 22nd March. Investors who are interested in attending should contact the respective investor relations officers (see contacts below).

About TEMENOS

The new face of outsourcing - back-office and not call centers

Silverjet Airlines Cargo selects Unitpool for ULD Outsourcing

Silverjet Airlines Cargo selects Unitpool for ULD Outsourcing

Press release

19 Mar 2007

Following the recent introduction of the first UK exclusively business class airline, Silverjet, its cargo division, Silverjet Cargo, has selected to outsource ULD control and pooling services to Unitpool.

“The decision to sign a long term agreement with Unitpool to supply our cargo containers and equipment is based on their reputation in the market and their ability to respond quickly to our requirement. Silverjet, the exclusively business class airline, have ambitious plans to expand their fleet and range of destinations in a short period of time. This agreement will allow us focus on developing the cargo business for the airline.” says Michael Meagher, Silverjet Cargo Managing Director.

Unitpool CEO, David Harman commented, “We are delighted to add Silverjet to our ULD pool. The selection of Unitpool by Silverjet underscores our finding that for a growing number of airlines, ULD outsourcing is recognized as a solution that reduces both cost and management attention. Through contracting Unitpool for all ULD related issues, Silverjet, like our other Pool partners, will not need to engage in the purchase, maintenance or repair of their ULD fleet, and neither will they need to purchase an IT system to control ULDs. All this is taken care of by Unitpool.”

Unitpool continuously sees a significant increase in interest in its services from airlines globally. Unitpool is now serving airline customers at more than 200 stations globally with a ULD pool of more than 23,000 ULDs.

Leveraging Line Maintenance - MROs Eye Line Maintenance Outsourcing

Leveraging Line Maintenance - MROs Eye Line Maintenance Outsourcing

Mar 14, 2007, by Carole Shifrin/Overhaul & Maintenance

Although there is less outsourcing of line maintenance than heavy, engine or component work, airline and independent MRO companies are increasing forays into the line maintenance market. Some large independent MROs are venturing away from their main bases to woo airline customers and are setting up operations at new stations.

A number of major MRO providers, which historically have performed a limited amount of line maintenance work, are out marketing new services to potential customers. Companies such as Timco Aviation Services and Cascade Aerospace see increasing airline interest in line maintenance provided by independent, as opposed to airline-owned, MROs.

Italy's Air One decides to outsource ULD management to: Jettainer

Air One decides to outsource ULD management: Jettainer enters Italian market

Press release

Air One decides to outsource ULD management: Raunheim, 21.03.2007 - Italy's fast growing carrier Air One has signed a three-year ULD (Unit Load Device) outsourcing contract with Jettainer. According to the agreement, Jettainer will take care of Air One's entire ULD requirements effective March 1, 2007.

Jettainer is a joint venture of international airfreight carrier Lufthansa Cargo AG and mobile asset management specialist TrenStar Inc. The company offers one-stop ULD management services that enable airlines to reduce costs and improve operational performance by outsourcing their ULDs into the expert hands and large, global fleet of a specialist ULD management company.

As part of Air One's customer centric development strategy, the carrier took delivery of the first of 40 ordered Airbus A320 aircraft in October 2006. The carrier selected the A320 for expansion as well as for gradual replacement of its existing Boeing 737 fleet. The commencement of A320 operations coincides with Air One's introduction of ULDs. While for many carriers around the world ULD management is a major, often problematic legacy, Air One is able to outsource this non-core activity to a competent partner from the very beginning, thereby avoiding any need to invest in mobile assets, technology and human resources while retaining a flexible cost basis.

After initially leasing ULDs from Jettainer at the start of Air One's A320 operations, outsourcing ULD management to Jettainer offers the airline a maximum of flexibility and immediate access to ULD management experience, professional resources, best practices and shared operational synergies with other airlines. Following the company's business strategy, Air One focuses on its successful growth, on providing the customers with a superior experience and on being their preferred airline. According to Air One, the smooth integration of the new Airbus fleet is part of this strategy- just as the decision to rely on Jettainer for giving the Airline the right mix of services and technology to support its operations.

Jettainer will handle the airline's entire ULD operations for a monthly fee covering ULD supply chain management services including active stock management, repair and maintenance, tracking and tracing, management reporting and other fleet administration services. In addition, Air One will benefit from the use of "Jettware", Jettainer's suite of latest information technology applications.

According to Jettainer Managing Director Dr. Mohammed Ali Seiraffi, Air One's selection of Jettainer as the preferred single source supplier for all its ULD requirements is the best possible proof of the value proposition offered by outsourced ULD management. "We applaud Air One's decision to outsource ULD management from the very beginning and are proud to partner with them" Seiraffi says. "It is a most rewarding experience to work with Air One. Throughout the entire company professionalism, courtesy and dedication to both customer service and technical innovation are omnipresent.

Uncovering the Potential: EMS Opportunities Within the Aerospace & Defense Industry

Uncovering the Potential: EMS Opportunities Within the Aerospace & Defense Industry

Press release

PALO ALTO, Calif., March 20 -- The Electronics and Sensors Group at Frost & Sullivan is pleased to announce its 2007 Quarterly Analyst Briefing Presentation on the aerospace and defense (A&D) EMS providers market to be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at 12:00 p.m. CDT / 1:00 p.m. EDT.

The A&D industry provides a goldmine of opportunities for EMS providers to expand their services. Though still a niche EMS market, the A&D industry has the potential to become a major revenue generator for EMS providers. When compared to the traditional EMS industries, the A&D industry offers a better profit margin. The downturn in the electronics industry and the subsequent recovery saw an increasing number of EMS providers trying to shed their focus on narrow verticals and venture into the hitherto unknown A&D industry.

This briefing will provide a concise analysis of the current trends within the A&D EMS providers market along with identifying key market trends that expect to have a significant impact on its growth rates. The briefing will also provide a gap analysis on vital parameters EMS providers fall short of, preventing them from making the expected growth trajectory within the A&D industry.

This briefing will benefit A&D original equipment manufacturers and electronics manufacturing service providers to include the whole value chain, by discussing current as well as emerging trends and providing forward projections for North American EMS opportunities in the A&D industry.

Highlights of the briefing include: an analysis of market trends, OEM outsourcing trends, revenue forecasts, gap analysis and competitive analysis.

"The A&D industry is proving to hold untapped promises for EMS providers," notes Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Lavanya Ram Mohan. "The A&D landscape is constantly evolving and as the budget constraints increase, OEMs will aim to increase their competitiveness by forging strategic alliances with EMS providers. EMS providers deliver competitive advantage to OEMs by letting the latter exploit EMS expertise in offering unrivaled manufacturing capabilities, design and test services, engineering capabilities, supply chain operations and also aftermarket services. Rapid advances in technology, escalating stress on profit margins and dealing with supply chain related challenges will continue to be major drivers for increasing levels of outsourcing."

Airbus to cut 1,600 British jobs in European shakeup

Terry Macalister, March 1, 2007, The Guardian

Airbus shook the British aerospace industry yesterday when it announced plans to loosen ties with one of its two manufacturing centres here and axe 1,600 jobs.
The move comes just months after the European plane maker's UK partner, the arms firm BAE Systems, sold its 20% stake in the business.

The cuts in Britain were part of a wider shake-up of the troubled group involving 10,000 job cuts, the closure or sale of three plants in France and Germany and plans for widespread outsourcing, some of which is likely to go to lower cost countries such as China.

Gas Utilities Adopt BPO More Aggressively Than Electric Cos - EquaTerra and UtiliPoint Study

Gas Utilities Adopt Business Process Outsourcing More Aggressively Than Their Electric Counterparts, According to Study by EquaTerra and UtiliPoint

Press Release, EquaTerra

March 12, 2007

HOUSTON - According to the results of a study conducted by EquaTerra and UtiliPoint, gas utilities in North America have strategic objectives beyond cost savings in mind when implementing business process outsourcing (BPO).

Findings from the telephone-based study include:

Gas utilities look to BPO as a means to improve business process improvement more readily than electric utilities
Gas utilities reported a higher percentage of fully outsourced processes than their electric counterparts, and appear to be more accepting of BPO in general
While reducing costs is a common goal, gas utilities are more interested in gaining access to business process skills and knowledge than electric utilities (42 percent versus 22 percent)
Said Matt Smith, Managing Director of EquaTerra’s Energy and Utility practice, “We believe the higher level of interest and adoption of BPO is a reflection of the significant impact increasing commodity costs are having on bottom-line results for many gas utilities. In addition, the relative size of gas utilities leaves fewer executive levers, such as acquisitions, available as alternatives. The relative size also drives the desire to gain access to business process knowledge that BPO providers can offer.”

Other results from the study – disclosed in UtiliPoint’s February 19, 2007 “IssueAlert” – included: 44 percent of total respondents said BPO was important as a means to improve business process improvement, and an additional 15 percent said it was very important; 33 percent have already fully outsourced some processes while 53 percent have partially outsourced some processes; and 65 percent of all respondents are either satisfied or very satisfied with BPO, 31 percent are somewhat satisfied, and the remaining 4 percent are not satisfied.

Said Smith, “Gas and electric utilities are both facing across the board cost increases and significant capital investment to address reliability and environmental concerns. New Report Shows Russia Will Become the Third Largest Outsourcing Destination for The ICT Industry by 2010

New Report Shows Russia Will Become the Third Largest Outsourcing Destination for The ICT Industry by 2010

March 13, 2007, Press Release by Research and Markets

DUBLIN, Ireland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c52025) has announced the addition of Frost & Sullivan’s new report "Social and Infrastructure & Labor Analysis for the Russian Information and Communication Technologies Industry" to their offering.

Research Overview

The global information and communications technology (ICT) industry has provided the supporting infrastructure for economic growth across the world in the last decade. Despite the setbacks following the failure of dot com enterprises, the ICT industry continues to show enormous growth potential. ICT is a vital component of the infrastructural support needed for the development of any economy. Global trends in telecommunications indicate a shift toward open access, creation of a healthy competitive environment, and a consequent drop in prices. Although companies are likely to continue outsourcing IT services mainly to India, they are also expected to increasingly witness lucrative bids from Russia, the Philippines, Ireland, Israel, and China.

ICT spending is likely to grow impressively, with emerging markets in eastern Europe and Asia Pacific leading the way. Shares of IT and telecommunications sectors are almost equally important in the total ICT spending, with governments and businesses accounting for more than three quarters of the spending. The growing affluence of the population and the globalization of enterprises also improve ICT consumption. It is vital for ICT enterprises to have a high-performance networking infrastructure, as their enterprise applications and operations depend on it.

Russia has been the biggest spender on IT among the central and eastern European (CEE) countries and its spending has been higher than the global average since 2002. This industry’s growth is high and stable, considering it witnessed double-digit growth for the last five years and is poised for further growth until 2010, although consumption trends in telecommunication vary across regions as well as segments.

Russia’s vast human resources and low labor costs hold it in good stead in the ICT industry and have set it on course to becoming the third largest outsourcing destination in the world by 2010. Its competent education system provides its citizens with high levels of skills, excellent training, as well as intensive scientific and engineering expertise. However, the industry is impaired by a shortage of IT specialists but this is set to change, with the present government strongly focusing on the development of the IT industry, since the telecommunications industry is already well covered. Also, a series of high-profile industry reports changed the general perception that the ICT infrastructure in Russia is inadequate by publishing positive articles.

Frost & Sullivan’s Information and Communication Technology Country Industry Forecast service provides vital inputs for evaluating the attractiveness of a country and its ICT industry. Besides enabling decision makers to assess the impact of non-market forces, it also helps in identifying new market opportunities. This service provides a strong base for preparing contingency plans. In addition, investors can assess industry-specific risk factors as well as conduct a more in-depth micro research.

HRO Hits Rough Waters, but Most Buyers Are Staying the Course, According to EquaTerra’s HRO Buyer Pulse Survey

HRO Hits Rough Waters, but Most Buyers Are Staying the Course, According to EquaTerra’s HRO Buyer Pulse Survey

March 21, 2007, Press Release from EquaTerra

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Responses to EquaTerra’s recently completed HR Outsourcing (HRO) Buyer Pulse Survey showed that buyers are only experiencing moderate benefits from their HRO agreements. But while HRO hasn’t borne out to be the panacea some had hoped for, many buyers believe improvements can be made to help them and their service providers still meet their original individual and mutual objectives.

The study was conducted in the second half of 2006. It included an online survey and interviews with more than 50 North American and Western European organizations that had undertaken multi-process HRO, some for over 10 years. The study yielded the following key findings:

Top-ranking benefits sought by HRO buyers: cost reduction, (ranked highest), followed closely by access to external skills and knowledge, process improvements, and ability to internally focus on more strategic activities
Only average success to date: on a one to five scale, with five being “benefits full achieved” and one being “benefits not at all achieved”, most anticipated benefits received rankings of between 2.5 and 3.0
Responsibility for HRO successes and problems: buyers tended to note that they share both success and problem responsibility with service providers, although they more often gave success credit to their own organization and placed blame on their provider
Recompetes, terminations and renewals: 31 percent plan to renew with their current key HRO provider; 31 percent are uncertain of their future course on renewals; 17 percent plan to recompete with similar scope; 10 percent plan to terminate and bring work back in-house; 10 percent plan to recompete with expanded scope; and eight percent of respondents plan to recompete their contract with reduced scope; These percentages signal that even with dissatisfaction, most buyers will continue with some form of HRO
Said Stan Lepeak, EquaTerra’s Managing Director of Research, “The results from this study and other ongoing EquaTerra research clearly shows that both HRO buyers and service providers can take steps to more consistently achieve common HRO goals. For example, they should focus on building realistic business cases with quantifiable and attainable benefits, not overly fixate on unrealistic cost cutting goals that result in poor service levels and unsustainably low or non-existent service provider profits, adequately invest in governance people, process and systems, and learn from their mistakes and experiences and then collaboratively work to restructure deals and relationships as needed.”

As open-ended survey questions enable respondents to anonymously provide positive or negative color commentary, following are a variety of actual survey responses:

What are the greatest achievements HRO has delivered to your organization? 1) "Access to specialized systems that we did not have the justification to build for ourselves”; 2) “Gaining access to knowledge experts and solid/consistent processes (claims management) through external vendors”; and 3) “Move from fixed overhead to variable costs (based on employee numbers)”
What has been your biggest disappointment with your HR outsourcing efforts? 1) “Lack of continuous process improvement as well as innovation from the service provider"; 2) “Limited flexibility with dealing with unique company issues and preferences”; and 3; “Cost containment”
Based on your experiences, do you feel the HRO industry/HRO service providers are mature/experienced enough to meet your HR outsourcing needs and deliver the benefits you seek? 1) ‘I believe that for individual processes, yes. However, I do not feel that the industry has proven that whole house outsourcing has demonstrated the savings and value promised”; 2) “I believe the HRO experience has enough traction to gain lessons learned”; 3) “No – they lack the flexibility and cannot move quickly enough to meet the needs of the business. Additionally, although they handle norms well, they have difficulty dealing with exceptions and providing the required attention”
An analysis of the results of EquaTerra’s HRO Buyer Pulse Survey will be presented during a webcast on April 26 in conjunction with the results from EquaTerra’s regularly scheduled 1Q07 Advisor and Service Provider Pulse Survey. This portion of the webcast will reveal in-the-field insights into ITO and BPO activity during January through March 2007. To register for the webcast, please contact: allison.norman@equaterra.com. A report detailing the survey findings will be available at the end of April 2007 by sending an e-mail to: research@equaterra.com.

EquaTerra’s Pulse Surveys cover a wide range of topics including challenges to deal consummation, the impact of compliance, levels of offshore outsourcing and demand breakdown by process and sub-process, horizontal and vertical industry trends, and demand predictions for the following quarter and half year.

India’s Outsourcing Problems - Costs, Talent, Ethics?

India’s Outsourcing Problems - Costs, Talent, Ethics?

Of late, there are problems with India's outsourcing, quotes this article "engineers skip projects after only a few months and salaries are rising by 14% per year..."

Ansd it goes on to say, "...to develop the Eurofreelancer.com website...we scoured approximately 8 different IT outsourcing companies in India,, China, Belarus and the UK. Although the labour costs in India were far lower than those in the other three countries, when browsing portfolios and taking into account experience, we noticed a distinct lack of expertise and trend-awareness. In the end we settled for a company in Belarus, a country that has a high population of extremely talented IT personnel...strong work ethic and little to no language barriers."

This is trend that is being seen more and more...companies keen to explore alternative locations, outside of India. This is getting particularly important for those people who are looking at outsourcing small-sized projects...

TPI's Peter Allen on productivity in outsourcing

Peter talks about productivity in software, with special emphasis on productivity in software outsourcing, in this blog post. Here's what he has to say, "Much of the India-based outsourcing industry has taken flight on the wings of lower-cost labor, not necessarily more-productive labor, though leaders of the many India-based service providers are now talking about the need to increase productivity. Some have introduced management process discipline to sell their services...These same management disciplines have rarely been adopted in the U.S. because, generally, they drive up the cost of the project."

Hilarious Video Posting on Offshore Outsourcing to India

Hilarious Video Posting on Offshoring to India

Outsourcing to offshore locations might be serious business for the companies involved, and a pain in the neck for those who are losing their jobs, but it could also do with some fun, can't it?

I came across a hilarious video on outsourcing to India. Highly exaggerated of course, but really funny. You have an American lady calling a security support center because she thinks some one had broken into her house, only to have a lady in India - who is also simulataneously handling calls for a pizza company, Dell, Air Canada and an escort service - absolutely frustrate her.

T&E Expense Reporting: an Arduous Process Begging for Automation

T&E Expense Reporting: an Arduous Process Begging for Automation

Aberdeen Group Study Press Release

New Aberdeen Study Finds a $1 Million Savings Opportunity for Expense Reporting
BOSTON, MA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 06, 2007 -- T&E (travel and entertainment) expense reporting and management is a complex process that, when manually managed with paper-based systems, is fraught with extraordinary compliance risk and inflated processing costs. Unfortunately, lack of automation in managing one of the largest categories of controllable enterprise spend is the norm, leaving most enterprises with inefficient processes that offer little visibility into overall T&E spend and no mechanism to ensure policy compliance. Material was revealed in a new study by Aberdeen, a Harte-Hanks Company (NYSE: HHS).

Several factors are increasing the focus on expense management for the 377 enterprises that participated in this study, including:

-- Compliance focus: The need to reduce current risk levels posed by non-
compliance with internal policies and external government regulations
-- Cost reduction: The competitive pressure to reduce processing,
administrative and auditing costs associated with expense reports
-- Employee productivity: The organizational pressure to improve employee
productivity and satisfaction

The top strategic action planned by almost 70% of respondents in this study is the adoption/improvement of technology to automate expense management processes.
Enterprises are looking to automate the "back-end" of expense management. Among others, accounts payable personnel expressed concerns with manual methods -- lengthy reimbursement cycles, losses due to fraud, non-compliance to regulatory requirement and travel policies, and poor visibility into spending data.

-- Processing costs: while enterprises using fully automated processes
have an average cost of $15 per expense report, costs for those using
manual systems is more than double ($31 per expense report). A company
processing 5,000 expense reports a month can save approximately $16 per
report on processing costs. The result is a savings of $960,000 in one
year.
-- Approximately 70% of Best in Class enterprises are using one of the
four automated methods for expense management (i.e., end-to-end solution,
ERP provider, expense management software or outsourcing), compared to only
42% for all other enterprises.

Additionally, respondents showed significant interest in using certain features that expense management systems provide, such as: on-demand access, hotel e-folio data integration, ability to use mobile devices, and receipt fax imaging.

The panelists shared their learning from business-transformation projects. At the most granular level comes the business process. A clear design of the business process as the first step would not ever hurt, the panelists were unanimous. In Wellpoint’s case where they had to unify multiple health plans and administer it from one system, a clear business-process design was critical. Whereas in McGraw Hill’s case, the business processes in print and electronic media had to supplement and complement each other.

In Europe, Tony O'Reilly's Independent News & Media announced plans to hive off the downtable sub-editing of three of its Irish newspapers to a company set up by two former staff members.

In the US, a growing number of news organisations such as International Herald Tribune and Ohio's Columbus Dispatch are relocating jobs to India.

"With the exception of the magic of writing and editing news ... almost every other function, except printing, is location-indifferent," said an industry professional.

Where: Millennium Hilton, 55 Church Street, New York, New York 10007

When: Tuesday, March 20, 2007; 8:00am EDT

The fully loaded cost of risk and compliance across the financial services industry will reach an estimated global total in the range of 330 billion USD in 2007. In addition to unnecessary duplication in technology, more than 80% of this cost is still comprised of direct administrative expenses (e.g., compliance, risk management, operational and financial controls) and includes the administrative overhead that is also loaded on most line and management functions.

This seminar addresses these issues. More on this news release from Sys Con

2007 will be one of the most challenging years in contact center outsourcing's history

8th March 2007

By Computer Business Review Online Staff Writer

A new report has revealed that contact center outsourcing providers are set to face tremendous challenges with the emergence of late-adopting vertical markets. Indeed, vendors are struggling to adapt industry-specific solutions to both new and established clients.

According to the Datamonitor report, "2007 Trends to Watch: Contact Center Outsourcing and Services," the evolution of horizontal functions will also challenge contact center outsourcers, as more investors move toward one-stop-shops for multiple services. In addition, technology shifts owing to customers rapidly adopting new technology will be an area of concern for outsourcing vendors.

THOLONS announces services globalisation trends for 2007

THOLONS announces services globalisation trends for 2007

Services globalisation is now a key strategic imperative for successful enterprises and will be the single most important factor shaping how services are developed and delivered across the globe. Globalisation has evolved from individual companies leveraging a few resources offshore to countries now vying to be the next destination for technology and business process outsourcing.

The 10 key future trends for 2007 are:

1. SMEs driven by private equity investors will become significant participants in services globalisation.
2. Firms will adopt the “Cities of Excellence” model, sourcing services from the best location for respective ITO and BPO domains
3. Multi-sourcing will dominate as mega-deals will be sourced to a mix of Tier I and “best of breed” Tier II service providers
4. ITO and BPO growth will be supply constrained in an extremely strong demand market
5. Globally service providers will witness a significant resource crunch
6. Engineering Services, R&D, ERP, Infrastructure Management, Product Development and Healthcare will see increased traction in 2007
7. Captives will see heightened activity in 2007, with parent companies considering spin-offs to cash out
8. Offshoring of customer-facing processes will slow down, and some may move back onshore or nearshore
9. Tier II and Tier III service providers will spread their global footprint acquisitions
10. India will continue to be the leading destination for ITO and BPO. Philippines will be a strong but a distant second while China will trail behind for next several years.

While 2007 will see India’s stature as the world’s back office growing, the Philippines will evolve as the preferred destination for offshoring customer-facing jobs based on the benefits of cost reduction, manpower availability, and quality that it brings to global organisations. Some important factors that might work in favor of Philippines include factors such as a committed and highly trainable workforce, strong cultural affinity with the west, and the expansion of existing BPO firms.

China has challenges with english language fluency, cultural implications and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). They have a lot of work to do to catch up, so it will be several years before Chinese services companies make their mark on the global ITO and BPO landscape.
