Translation is one area where outsourcing makes a lot of sense, primarily because the activity is of a routine nature, and rarely is it strategically critical for an organization.

Translation need not necessarily imply translation from one language to another, though that is the meaning that is discussed in this section. Broadly, translation can also mean translation from one format to another ( as in from MPEG format to AVI format for audio) and other related concepts.

Specifically with regard to language translation, this is a large area where outsourcing is already taking place in small ways. Outsourcing in translation domain is different from outsourcing in other domains primarily because of the destinations to which outsourcing can take place. For instance while India is a preferred outsourcing destination for many administrative functions, it might not be so for translation work involving Spanish, for India has few Spanish language professionals.
